info:
a collaboration and installation with the fantastic poet Robin Coste Lewis at the Headlands Center for the Arts in California. The piece combined poems derived from a children’s book, images and a sound installation created from a live recording of “Old Man River.” The racist stereotypes described in the book were altered by the poet, reclaiming the words and giving them new meaning. The installation took place in a military latrine that was chosen because the poet’s father, an African-American, was relegated to janitor duty in World War II. This setting created an environment of both reflection and unrest. The sounds of voices took on a strange echo quality in such an acoustically active room and reverberated quietly throughout the building, evoking memory through distance (6:35 loop).
