Instruments: 4 cellos
Duration: 4 minutes
Note:
Italo Calvino’s essay “Lightness” is the inspiration for Light and Line. Calvino likens the concept of lightness in novels as “the subtraction of weight,” “small, light, and moving,” and like “little motes of dust swirling in a shaft of sunlight in a dark room.” He also notes how being melancholy, for him, is always a mixture of sadness and lightness. Light and Line explores these sentiments in music. It is not in a hurry, is both still and moving, and imagines the slow shifting light in an open room as notes moving between the instruments.
